The universe operates under a predictable set of laws. It’s always possible to understand what is happening, why it’s happening, and what is most likely to happen next (if you have all the relative data).
The same formulas that explain the laws of physics can be used to explain business principals. That means there are basic laws that you have to know if you’re going to control the success or failure of your business.
This is the first post in a 3 part series on Newton’s 3 Laws Of Business.
The First Law Of Business: In the absence of Force, a business is either at rest or moves in a straight line with a constant speed.
That means, if your business was operating in a vacuum, you could simply establish a product, do a little bit of marketing and it would continue to sell forever…
But no business operates in a vacuum, just like no ball rolled along the floor would continue to roll forever. You have to deal with friction and obstacles.
The friction and obstacles of business are competition, customer resistance, economic conditions, internal forces, a change in market demands etc.
Because of this, no product will continue to sell indefinitely without Force.
It’s a simple concept but a lot of businesses ignore it.
A business will come out with a new product and expect it to take off… but it doesn’t. Why?
Because they didn’t apply any force to set it in motion.
Once you know the Newtonian laws, you quickly get beyond this problem.
No one gets in a car and expects it to automatically take them where they want to go… you have to drive it. If you don’t start the engine and hit the gas pedal, the car just sits there (and it’s not the car’s fault).
In business, you have to do the same thing. You have to hit the gas.
If you apply no Force, or too little Force to your product, it’s not going to do anything. And it’s not the product’s fault.
How To Apply Force On Your Products
For an existing product, there’s only one kind of Force to apply: Marketing.
Marketing doesn’t just happen, you have to make it happen.
Think about it. In nature, the only Force that happens without any effort is gravity and gravity is always dragging you down.
Your product has the same problem. If you don’t apply enough Force to keep things moving in the direction you want, the only direction they move is down.
You can apply the marketing force yourself, or you can hire someone else to do it for you. Either way, you have to invest, and continue to invest, time or money.
There’s no perpetual marketing machine.
The type of product you’re selling will dictate the type and amount of marketing needed. And luckily, there’s an easy formula for determining that…
Which is covered in the Second Law of Business…
